OK, I Need a Smartphone…

I have a Moto RAZR which has served me well for the year I’ve had it but I need to have mobile access to my email. I’ve got the Gmail Java app which is pretty good for reading but text entry is more work than I’d like to see. I would also like a better web browsing experience than offered on the RAZR’s bundled browser or the surprisingly good Opera mini.

Since I’m a year into my two year service contract, I can’t just go over to Amazon and buy a Treo 680 (free after rebate + another 2 years) or Samsung BlackJack (+$25 after rebate + another 2 years). I’ll have to wait until next January which is just too long. So now I’m looking on eBay for used Treos, Nokia’s and HTC’s but not certain that’s the right bridge solution until next year… I just need something that will work for the next 7 months and, if my consulting business takes off, I might just spring for one of those iPhones then 😉

One last thing, I don’t like Blackberry’s becasue they remind me of my geeky Handspring VisorPhone back in the day.

  1. I’d grab a Treo 650 as a mean time phone. However, don’t let anyone show you how much faster they can browse the web on a 700p or 700wx.

As a Palm user (700p, Palm OS, on Sprint), the iPhone doesn’t excite me. I don’t think I could type on the screen as fast I can on a tactile keyboard. And Sprint’s data network is currently faster than Cingular’s.

  3. Are you on a Verizon plan. The other month I got something in the mail saying I was part of the “Verizon Wireless VIP Program”.

I’m not sure how I got in the VIP, but there are some great perks. One is that you can renew your phone every year instead of every other. I’m not sure, but you might be able to call them up, ask about the VIP program, and get in.

  5. Thanks for your comments, guys.

Jason: I’m on Cingular, but I will give them a call and see what their upgrade policy is. The rules on Amazon are you have to be 20 months into your contract before upgrade; I’m just 12 this month.

Ed: Treo 650 is what I am tracking on eBay but I’m also looking at the Nokia E62. Both seem to be somewhat reasonable used but I’m not sure if that’s such a good idea. I’ll check into getting a new one.
