Will Downloads Kill Optical Media?

Garrick brings up a good point regarding my post about HD-DVD yesterday. I agree that downloadable video will be the eventual winner here, but HD-DVD will carve out a place somewhat like LaserDisc did in the 1980’s and ’90’s. What downloads lack right now is the density of content (i.e. “special features”) and my broadband connection is not fast enough to land 30 GB’s of video on my Xbox in the time it takes Blockbuster to mail the HD-DVD to me. That, of course, will change. What will not change is Hollywood’s paranoia over piracy, which ironically will lead to more piracy as video playback devices continue to evolve.
