Congrats, Ilan!
Just finished watching the finale to Top Chef (the only episode I watched live; all others TiVoed) and was surprised and delighted to see Ilan win. While Marcel might be the better chef, he is such an arrogant guy I’m happy he lost. The live chat now being webcast with both Ilan and Marcel only underscores my opinion. Grow up, man. Looking forward to Top Chef 3 later this year.

Earth to be devastated by solar flare?
As if there wasn’t enough to worry about these days, I heard about the possibility certainty of a major disaster that will kill 1/3 of the earth’s population on my drive to the San Francisco airport this morning. Since it was 4:30 am, I could just dismiss this story as the ramblings of a kook, but the speaker, a scientist, seemed convinced of his analysis of “the data.” He...

Charter tech support is for morons
At least the automated part is. My internet connection and digital cable has been out for 3 hours and I called them on my cell phone only to get into the most basic automated “helper” that I’ve ever been subjected to. Note to Charter customer support VP: not every customer doesn’t know their cable modem from their toaster. Once I got to the live person, things moved along...

Second thoughts about iPhone
So I’ve thought more about this iPhone business and a few things really bother me. First, the battery situation is not good. With no removable battery, I’m kind of out of luck in getting the most out of a device like this. Although I don’t carry any extra battery for my RAZR now, I know I could if I needed to (I also don’t listen to music or watch TV shows on this phone)....

Weird Job Search Dreams
For the past few nights I’ve been having job search related dreams which I can’t remember ever having before. In the most recent dream, I was networking with a former colleague who now works at a well known technology company and suddenly our conversation becomes a full blown interview with a dozen people in the room (how did that happen?). I respond well to this turn of events and...

Meetup before Guy Kawasaki talk on Friday
Local A-list tech blogger Graeme Thickins is hosting a meetup at the U of M before Guy Kawasaki’s talk this Friday, January 19th. According to Graeme’s post, the metup will start around 11:30 am at the McNamara Alumni Center. I’m looking forward to hearing Guy speak as I have been a long-time admirer of his books and daily reader of his blog. See you there, if you can make it....

Funny Robot Chicken Clip
If you are a Millennial or have teenage kids, you will probably find this clip hilarious. Warning: knowledge of the end of the film Titanic required (otherwise, spoiler ahead): (Click back to the blog for the video if you are reading in an aggregator).

How much battery life does it have?
Not as funny as their first Steve Jobs bit, but still worth a look. The iPhone sketch from SNL last night: (Click back to the blog for the video if you are reading in an aggregator). Updated with the official NBC version 1/19/07

Who cares if iPhone is not really running MacOS X?
So it’s interesting to note the tone of some other bloggers who have come out negative regarding Apple’s iPhone. After the mainstream media went very positive all around, it seems that many bloggers are complaining about a closed system that could block 3rd party software developers, bad battery life and high price tag. I remain enthusiastically positive and have signed up to be one of...

Great Podcast on Personal Branding
One of the blogs I read daily is Jason Alba’s JibberJobber. I noticed today he had recorded a podcast with Anna Farmery from The Engaging Brand podcast. After listening to it today, it really changed how I think about networking and tools like JibberJobber. It also gave me some ideas to improve this blog to better promote my personal brand. Check it out by hitting the play button on the...

Apple iPhone and Social Media
Well, I can claim some sort of victory from my prediction this morning that Apple would announce a game changing tablet computer today, but I didn’t think it would be a mobile phone sized Mac! I expected something a bit closer to a Newton-esque OS but the version of MacOS X running on the iPhone looks like something really interesting from a number of angles. You can read about it here, here...

What's Up Steve's Sleeve?
The annual gathering of the Macintosh faithful opens today in San Francisco. As is the custom of this event, Steve Jobs will again deliver a keynote and announce all sorts of new products. The rumor sites have been rounding up the most likely scenarios, with the most buzz about an Apple phone. That seems very credible since the Wall Street Journal has reported Cingular as the U.S. carrier, but I...

What I did last weekend
On Saturday morning I started to FTP into my Winecast installation and copy down 2+ GB of Wordpress + podcasts. I then went about my day while it downloaded. I noticed that a cache folder would not download so instead of just ignoring this I deleted the the folder from my live Wordpress install. Big mistake as I crashed Wordpress on my main website before I even started my migration to a new...

Nice Work, Matt
I just made the jump to beta 1 of Wordpress 2.1 and things seem to be working fine so far (no broken plugins, etc.). Maybe I’ll get really brave and turn back on the visual HTML editor ;-) A review once I live with it a while but for Wordpress folks this is a really big upgrade. Oh, and a new stable release of Wordpress came out today so I’ve got another 4 blogs to upgrade to...

I'm Baaack!
Well, that wasn’t so difficult but it did require a call to Media Temple’s tech support to get the MySQL database imported correctly (comment out the “create database” command from your export). Not sure if this server seems faster or not, but I like what I’m seeing so far from their service. Next move will be Winecast sometime soon… Now back to normal blogging,...

Movin' Servers...
I’ve had it with the sluggish performance of my super cheap GoDaddy hosting for this blog so I’m going to move it to my new account over at Media Temple. At the same time, I’m gonna take up Matt Mullenweg’s challenge to test beta 1 of Wordpress 2.1. See you on the other side in a day or so… faster if the DNS propagates quickly, etc.

Will 2007 Be The Year Of The Widget?
I’ve read a lot of predictions over the past few days about the top tech trends of 2007 and widgets came up over and over. So I went over to Widgetbox and chose a couple to add to my left menu. So far I’m not too impressed but I still have an open mind. I’ll be adding and subtracting widgets there throughout the year and revisit this subject from time to time.

There's a story here, somewhere...
When I was in high school, I made a series of artwork based upon found negatives from the 1920’s and ‘30’s. Today I noticed a story on Digg about a Flickr set of some found snapshots. In my high school work, I told a fictional story based upon a selection of a couple images. This set reminds me of the same thing but I also wonder about the “real” story of this...

So I Didn't Get The Memo...
…about The Edge Question. In reading through the best and brightest in science, business and technology write about much more long-term and deep reasons for optimism than my list, I was struck by a couple things. First, the lack of discussion of Web 2.0 and social media (the closest is an excellent essay by Kai Krause at the bottom of page 6 and Chris Anderson’s piece on page 11). And...

What are you optimistic about? Why?
I hadn’t heard about the Edge question until I started reading blogs this morning and saw a couple links. The question is a very good one to start this new year out with, so as I watch the Rose Parade CapitalOne Bowl in HD, I’ll chip away at answering it. And I haven’t yet read any of the A-list bloggers comments yet… What are you optimistic about? 1. The power of social media 2. The U.S. economy...
