Grazr-Google Reader Mashup
What started out as a Grazr showing my social media and marketing reading list became a way to display my starred items in Google Reader on the left sidebar. I was inspired by a post on the Grazr blog and used my Bloglines marklet to discover the feed of my public items. Pretty cool, eh?

I Guess I Know Movies
Based upon this list, anyway. My personal Top 5: 1. Lawrence of Arabia - David Lean’s greatest epic. Everything about this movie is perfect; can’t wait for the HD release. 2. The Searchers - Both John Ford and John Wayne’s best work. You haven’t seen a Western until you have seen this film. Looks amazing in HD. 3. The Godfather, Part II - Francis Coppola’s best film...

Will Downloads Kill Optical Media?
Garrick brings up a good point regarding my post about HD-DVD yesterday. I agree that downloadable video will be the eventual winner here, but HD-DVD will carve out a place somewhat like LaserDisc did in the 1980’s and ‘90’s. What downloads lack right now is the density of content (i.e. “special features”) and my broadband connection is not fast enough to land...

End of the "Job Search"
I received an email reply from one of the hiring managers from a recent interview who said I, “…did not fit exactly our spec.” I think this is at the root of my lack of success in finding the right fit for my next job as employers are being extraordinary selective these days. So my “job search” is now officially over; my quest to create my next job has begun.

My Personal Brand 3.0
In early 2002 I bought this domain as a part of my first job search since I graduated from college. I picked up a website template and populated it with my resume and bio. I’m not sure if this had any effect on my eventual success of finding my next gig, but it made me feel better at the time. Over the past 4 years, I’ve been using this place off and on for personal blogging which you...

Best Linux Distro For Windows Users
I’ve been upgrading and rebuilding the Windows computers in my house over the holidays and have been using what I think is the most useful distribution of Linux: GParted. I know that every distribution of Linux has this software, but the live CD makes partition sizing and disk formatting dumb simple for Windows users. Just setup your bios to boot to your CD drive first, stick in the GParted...

Why HD-DVD Will Win
My son got the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player for Christmas this year and we watched our first movie the other night (The Searchers; his choice). The difference between this and a standard DVD is incredible. I think that HD-DVD will win in the format wars for a couple reasons. First, the Sony Playstation 3 will not be as popular as earlier versions of the console due to the lack of compelling games, so...

Social Media Is A Pretty Funny Place
A couple days ago my son called me about a sign at our local QuikTrip station. Apparently the store manager was trying to get some sales by dissing the PS3 right before Christmas. Since it was dark, I said we’d try in the morning for a good picture. Yesterday I drove him to the station and he took some shots, then uploaded one to Flickr and submitted to Digg. Today there are nearly 1,900...

I'm Dreaming Of A Brown Christmas?
Although there is a bit of ice on the ground, the sun is shining and it’s 39’ F right now in the Twin Cities. Kind of like Christmas in Kansas City and not the normal couple inches of white stuff on the grass… maybe Al Gore is right about that global warming stuff, after all ;-) Merry (Happy) Christmas, if that’s your tradition.

Podcast Ready: Not Quite Ready For iPod
I’m in between iTunes libraries right now as I’ve just upgraded systems. Since my music and playlists don’t change much, it’s not a big problem to not sync except to keep up with podcasts. So instead of going through the hassle of re-syncing to the new library imported from my last install, I tried out Podcast Ready’s myPodder software. This software was the talk of...

Socializer: Social Bookmarking on Crack
Via PlugIM I found Socializer a sort of meta social bookmarking service. Instead of clicking each of the links below and manually filling out each entry (to Digg and del.icio.us, for example) all you do is click on the “Socialize This” button and then the icon for each of dozens of services listed. It only took about 5 minutes to implement with Anders Bergman’s Wordpress plug-in...

It's all about 'hustle'
Over the weekend I listened to the latest edition of the CalacanisCast; Jason Calacanis’ new podcast. However you feel about Jason’s style, you can’t argue with his success as an entrepreneur and his story continues to be an inspiration for me. Near the end of “beta 8” Jason talks about hustle in the context of making things happen at CES last year and scooping...

Nice Job Search Tip
I’m a sucker for posts like this. Yep, I fired off an email to Harry and received back his autoresponder with his vCard. Very cool job search hack. So naturally I set this up with the “vacation” feature of Gmail; just drop me a line to see how it works.

Digg Meets New Marketing
I just ran across a new social news site that combines the bookmarking and voting like Digg with a new marketing focus. It’s called PlugIM (get it?); subscribed and registered (twelliott). You can follow my activity at this feed. Cool idea; let’s see if there are enough users out there interested in this niche to make this work (my gut says there will be).

Windows XP Install Solid
The other day I posted about my troubles with my newly upgraded Windows system. Thanks to Google and the blogosphere I’ve fixed my install. I had an issue with spoolsv.exe taking 99% of my new CPU. Now it’s all fixed thanks to this post. Thanks, Tim!

CaseCamp in Second Life
Well this has been the week for open source conferences for me; first it was MinneDemo in the real world on Monday, then CaseCamp in Second Life Thursday night. Both were very cool events but I think the one with the most impact for me was CaseCamp. Held in the virtual world of Second Life on crayon island, there were great presentations of “new marketing” campaigns and a...

MinneDemo 2 Wrap-up
I’m a bit late on the draw with my summary of Monday’s MinneDemo 2, but I wanted to add a bit to the conversation. Unlike Graeme and Garrick, I stayed in the main demo room most of the night; a mistake on my part as networking was as much (or more) a part of the event as the presentations themselves. Next time I’d like to see less Powerpoints and more demos of the sites or...

Live From MinneDemo 2
6:45 PM CST - Made it to the Acadia Cafe, picked up a Rouge Stout and made a b-line for the presentation area where about 40 seats are for the almost 200 attendees… The seats near the power outlets are reserved for the speakers so I’m on batteries for the next 3 hours (or as long as my MacBook will run). Uploaded a couple shots to my Flickr pool. Ready for the first demo in about 10...

Live Blogging MinneDemo Tomorrow
I’ll be honing my live blogging skills at MinneDemo tomorrow evening. I missed the first one earlier in the year but heard some really great things about it, so I’m in for this time around. Just checked the wiki and 165 people have signed up. Should be interesting; tune in tomorrow night around 7:00 pm CST for what’s happening. If you are there, say ‘hi’;...

Make Coasters The Windows Vista Way!
If you have Windows Vista and haven’t installed a proper CD/DVD creation application, you will be presented with the option to let Windows burn the disk for you. I tried this today and it works as advertised, even more seamlessly than the similar app in MacOS X. The only problem is the resulting disk is not readable on a Mac; Windows XP seems to like it fine but I frequently burn CD’s...

In Upgrade Hell
Almost every year about this time, I upgrade my Windows PC with some new part. Usually it’s just an incremental upgrade, like a new video card, but this year it was a total lobotomy (i.e. new motherboard and CPU). While I love the speed boost, there are issues with my Windows XP install which make it almost unusable. Ironically, the dual boot to Windows Vista works great and I’m...
